Harder than Wordle: tougher word games for confident solvers

Once you solve Wordle in three or four most days, the challenge fades. These games are harder in different ways, so pick the kind of difficulty you enjoy: stricter rules, a game that plays against you, false clues, more boards, or no letter clues at all.
Start with Wordle's own Hard Mode
Wordle's settings include a free Hard Mode with one rule: any hint you have been given must be used in later guesses. A green letter must stay in its spot and a yellow letter must appear somewhere in every guess after it, so you can no longer spend a guess on five fresh letters to scout the alphabet. It is the gentlest way to make the game harder without leaving it.
Games that fight back
The answer moves to dodge you, so there is no lucky guess. Its Challenge mode, where you must force a given target word to be the answer, is the hardest thing on this page.
One tile in every row lies, so each clue has to be checked against the others. Nine guesses help, but every deduction needs a second look.

Two secret words that share no letters, with their clues merged onto one board. The hard part is working out which word each green or yellow belongs to, with nine guesses to find both.
Harder because of more boards
Every extra board means more clues to track at once, and fewer spare guesses per word: Dordle gives you seven guesses for two words, Quordle nine for four, Octordle 13 for eight.
Its Extreme daily cuts you to eight guesses and uses more unusual words.
The Rescue mode starts from poor opening words picked by the computer and leaves nine guesses for eight words.
Harder because of stricter rules or longer words
Ultra Hard mode goes beyond Wordle's Hard Mode: yellow letters must move away from where they were clued, and grey letters can never return. Set the length to 9, 10 or 11 letters and six tries suddenly feel very few.
Harder because there are no letter clues

Each guess gets only a similarity score in meaning, from a language model, and a rank once you are close. It was built to be much harder than Wordle, and most players need dozens or hundreds of guesses.
The friendlier cousin of Semantle: your guesses are ranked rather than scored, and a hint is always available, but you still have no letters to work with.

What does Hard Mode do in Wordle?
It makes every revealed hint compulsory: green letters stay where they are and yellow letters must be used in each later guess. It is a setting in the game and costs nothing.
